I'm liking this colour combo. I've always liked contour maps. This is a strange contour map. I wonder how hilly this place would be.

These paintings still need a little bit more work. I'm going to put white maps on top and see how they go.

I'm going to start making paintings with white backgrounds as opposed to the black. I am really liking this one so far. It reminds me of a photo negative. Probably because I've been working on black for so long.

I'm also going to try painting on board a bit more. Most of my work is acrylic on canvas.

I did a commission for the first time in ages and it all went well. The ladies in Sydney were very happy with the final pieces.

I'm going into the studio early this morning to work on some new pieces. Thinking about doing some paintings with different coloured backgrounds rather than just the black all the time. We'll see how it goes :-)

While I was in San Francisco in 2007 on a study exchange I participated in a class titled 'conceptual strategies' which looked at conceptual art through new media art and artists. My professor was Paul Catanese. I really enjoyed this subject and have wanted to get back into it for ages and then I saw a free workshop on Processing at the Edge. If you are interested in new media but don't know how to go about getting into it i recommend that you check out the edge.

I am going to start experimenting with Processing and posting them on my other blog. Some might look like nothing, but it's all about getting back into writing code — which is a left brainer. Something I am not using much of right now :-)

Back into the swing...

Back into the swing of working in the studio. Not that I actually had much of a holiday, but the few days around Christmas took me away from the studio.

Sent my work to the Albury Art Prize today. I got special heavy duty boxes made up and wrapped the paintings in bubble wrap inside so hopefully they will get to the gallery safely. I got quotes ranging from $160 one way (by my favourite courier) to $949 one way!!!! which is absolutely ridiculous!

Today I was working on a commission and by the end of the day it was driving me crazy. I have taken photos at various stages that you can see below. Hopefully I will get it finished by the end of the week.

Just spent all my money on art supplies. I need to sell some paintings I think. :-)

I've just discovered Molotow paint markers. They are fantastic. A bit more expensive than poscas but totally worth it! You can't buy them directly from germany if you live in Australia... unfortunately... but I have found a place on the gold coast who sells them.

I have just had a meeting to confirm my solo exhibition at Redland Art Gallery in June next year. I visited the space and took some photos. It is really great that a regional gallery can afford to put on shows. The gallery is paying for everything. This really helps when you aren't making much money from selling work :-)

The exhibition will run from June 20 - July 18, 2012

I have a few exciting things starting to happen. Hopefully I will find out more details before Christmas. It will make it the best Christmas present ever :-) As soon as I can I will post the details on my blog.

Doing lots of work lately. I have been quite productive but I want to keep the paintings for my exhibition in Melbourne as a surprise so I won't be posting any images until it's on.

Having a meeting with Redland Gallery in the next few days to discuss a solo late next year also. That will be good.

The Albury Art Prize

I just found out that my work has been selected for the Albury Art Prize 2012. The winner receives a self-directed $20,000 international residency. I am one of 16 artists in the running and I am very happy about it :-) Dr Gene Sherman is the judge.

Went to the studio for the first time in two weeks today. I really needed a break. I was so happy with what I got done this morning I can't wait to get back there this afternoon.

My work on a wall! I think it looks fantastic :-) Actually selling your work was almost looked down upon at uni. Heaven forbid you actually aim to make a living out of your art! That is my goal and I know it's going to be hard because I don't want to compromise to suit someone's interior design. I don't think I will need to somehow. And if that's seen as being conceited then C'est la vie. You can't please everyone.

I am very happy to announce that I am now represented by Gilligan Grant Gallery in Melbourne. My first solo will be held next year from 23 of February until the 25 of March.

This is very exciting for me and I have already begun working on new paintings for the exhibition. I won't be posting images on the blog of finished works but I will blog about how I'm going and any other news that I might have. I am also planning an exhibition in Brisbane later on in the year but don't have any details about that yet :-)

Going down to Melbourne next Tuesday to meet with a gallery. I am looking forward to it. I feel like I am finally getting somewhere. Although I can be impatient as I only finished honours last year, sometimes it feels like I am getting nowhere. Having said that... my solo exhibition was the best thing I could have done and I am very glad that I did. I really didn't expect anything to come from it. It was more about runs on the board and getting to work on paintings the way I wanted to.

After a short break I am going to be starting a new project as well as continuing what I was doing this year.

At the end of the year I am participating in a group show with about 54 other artists called Exchange. I will be putting in two paintings (one of which can be seen above) and the other one I am swapping with one of the other artists in the show.

Sitting at the Art Factory where my first solo show is on right now. Looking at my work all together for the first time, I am really happy with the way my work is developing. I have returned to explore earlier ideas from 2006 - 2008. It feels right to be sticking to what I was interested in from the beginning, rather than going in directions that suited others. Doing honours was like a baptism by fire for me, but looking back on last year, going through honours has made me stronger and more confident in myself and my work. I am happy that I have stuck to what I know I should be doing.

What has also made this exhibition fantastic is that I have have had lots of encouragement from people I respect and love. I like being alone in the studio getting into it, but receiving the feedback I've had over the last few days makes all the hard work worthwhile. Also, I sold 5 paintings so I am really happy about that too.

Im going to get back into physical computing. I really enjoyed experimenting while I was studying in San Francisco. I want to combine it with painting somehow... we'll see what happens. I will be looking at Processing and Arduino. I would especially like to learn how to create a wireless IR sensor artwork.?!?!!? who knows where it will go.

At the moment working part time and painting full time. It's hard to get everything done some times. There's been a few things I haven't been able to apply for because of a lack of time but I really can't complain as it's working out so far. I am really glad to be finished uni and not having to write a lot but I find that I am now going back to the books to learn more about what I am interested in.

I am looking at heterotopias right now. It is a concept in human geography elaborated by philosopher Michel Foucault to describe places and spaces that function in non-hegemonic conditions. These are spaces of otherness, which are neither here nor there, that are simultaneously physical and mental. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterotopia_(space)) I am using the term to describe an idyllic home – an escape – situated in a landscape that may or may not physically exist and is nostalgically remembered from past experience, a dream or a yearned for place seen in a lifestyle magazine.

I utilise town planning maps to represent order, restrictions and boundaries imposed on the natural topography and how these artificially created limits reflect on the economic value of the land and the type of people, housing and industry that can be found in these places. In contrast to the drawn planning lines, abstracted housing and landscapes represent people’s dreams, realities and aspirations that may exist in these physical or mental heterotopias.

I have a great book Key thinkers on space and place that I am finding very useful right now.

After being out of uni for about 6 months I have started going back to work i was doing 3 years ago. It is fantastic to be able to paint what I want!

Also applying for residencies and exhibitions in other states so we'll see how I go. I would really like to have a show in Melbourne next year. Hopefully I will find out soon.

Picked up my painting from the Prometheus Visual Arts Award on the Gold Coast today. It was a great exhibition and very professionally presented. I was really happy with the way my painting 'A light came on in his room' looked.

Meanwhile still working on paintings for my solo show in August. It's going really well and I am looking forward to it.

Sometimes it is really hard to know what to do when you are an emerging artist. I want to earn a living making art but I don't want to just make decorative paintings. My work is conceptual as well as being nice to look at. I want gallery representation but do I wait until someone approaches me or should I be proactive and approach suitable galleries? what if I pick the wrong one? Is it all about who you know rather than the work? Is it about being a squeaky wheel and making the most noise?

Gallery representation is not the be all and end all but it's a good start I think.

My artist talk and workshop at Pine Rivers Gallery went really well today. I met some really nice people and we had fun making collages and drawings based on Psychogeography. I am actually thinking of creating new workshops with curriculums using the skills I learnt in my Cert 4 course and doing regular workshops. Something to think about :-)

I did my install this morning for the Brisbane Emerging Arts Festival at Metro Arts in the city. The paintings are laid out a bit differently. They come off the wall and lean against the wall, as well as being butted up against each other, rather than the traditional equal space between each painting lined up neatly in a row. I am really happy with the way my work looks and I just can't wait to Saturday night's opening. I will post photos on Sunday.

I always get so stressed about install and I'm not sure why. I am always prepared with measurements and alternatives if the first idea doesn't work out, so I have nothing really to worry about. It always turns out ok but I still worry. Strange.

This is the painting I am working on right now. Can't wait to see how it turns out. When I begin a painting I start with the house I want to paint and then consider colour. Then I add the maps after to suit the underpainting. I plan up to a point but I like a bit of spontaneity. This is where the magic happens I think.

I am really enjoying experimenting with colour, as my work for honours last year was quite flat, so this is a welcome development. I am currently painting in acrylic but a lot of people think it is oil.

I am enjoying being in studio so much but reality is starting to set in. I need to start selling some of my work. I am going to start actively looking for gallery representation. This is going to require a lot of research and a few interstate trips I think. So I need to get cracking and paint as many works as possible while maintaining quality so I have plenty of work to show.

As part of my ArtStart grant I bought a new easel. It is fantastic. It came in pieces so I had to oil it and put it together.

Another artist has moved into the spare rooms so I won't be all by my lonesome anymore. I am not sure if he has a website but his name is Edward.

At the moment I am busily making new work for 2 shows in February. The Relaunch show at Jugglers in the Valley and the Brisbane Emerging Artists festival Check-in exhibition. I am very excited to be in both exhibitions.

Stretched my first canvas at the studio yesterday on the floor. I think I will need another bench to do this job as it was quite difficult doing it on the carpet this way :-) i managed to get it done but it probably would have been easier if it was a wooden or concrete floor. I used to do it at my old studio on the concrete floor no problems. The staple gun I got worked well so I was happy about that.

Doing some planning with Emma Lindsay today for our exhibition in August. That will be a good one! I will be talking about this one on my blog.

I also got a copy of MYOB so I can start entering all my receipts into the program. This will help with BAS and end of year tax return. I have got my head around most of it but am getting my friend Jen Upton to help me set it up properly :-) She has started her own business doing book keeping so if you need someone she is good.

So much to do! Got to organise business cards soon too...

ArtStart Grant

I am so excited! I got the Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart grant. The first grant application I have ever done.

I am one of two visual artists in Queensland to receive an Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart grant in the December round. The $10 000 ArtStart grant will enable me to establish, develop and market my emerging professional visual arts practice in Brisbane. This money will help pay for things like my studio rent, utilities and business development.

There were 261 visual arts applications and only 47 were successful.

I am actually starting to feel human again. I thought it would take a lot longer after finishing honours this year. I nearly have my new studio set up and new ideas are forming. Should find out about the art start grant soon too. I am really hoping I get that one as it will really help with setting up my arts practice.

These are photos of my paintings in the exhibition that opens at QCA Wednesday night. In one section they are very crowded and I am not really happy about that but there was nothing I could do. Hopefully they won't be let down by the lack of space. In contrast the other room is a minimal hang which i really like.

The bottom two photos was how I hung my paintings for my critique. I would have rather done an installation with wall paintings and other pieces but was discouraged from doing so. Unfortunately my marks suffered as a result. But putting bad experience behind me I am looking forward to holding my own exhibitions next year and being able to present my work the way it is supposed to be seen.

The Mater Private Hospital has just bought 7 of my paintings for its collection!!! I am really happy about it. That's 8 in total now :-)

But don't worry! I have more to chose from, so if you want to purchase one, the graduation exhibition is the place to see them. If you can't make it to the exhibition I am happy to make an appointment for you to come and see my work in my studio.

My graduation exhibition is on Wednesday the 1st of December from 6pm - 9pm.

I signed a lease on my new studio on Saturday. I am renting it through Jugglers in the Valley. It is an old house near a train line. I am sharing with one other girl at the moment but I haven't actually met them yet. I am so excited about this new phase in my art practice. It's like the beginning and I am starting to see light at the end of the tunnel :-)

I am so excited about the next phase of my career. It won't be easy but I reckon it will work out. I would really like to get my own studio asap but I can't really afford it right now. I have set aside a part of my flat to paint in by putting up drop sheets. It will do for now. Can't wait till the end of year exhibition opening on Dec 1 when my honours degree will finally be over!!!

I finish my honours degree on the 10th of November!!! and the graduation exhibition is on Dec 1 at Queensland College of Art.

I am really looking forward to finishing uni and beginning my arts practice full time. I have applied for an Art Start Grant and a residency at Metro Arts so hopefully I will get good news in December.

only 6 weeks till I hand in my exegesis... i am so ready to get into the big bad world!!! at the moment i feel like I am achieving little. But i shouldn't be so negative. i have painted a shitload of new pieces and they make a great series. more are to come.

went to bunnings today to get some house paint. I figured I am painting houses so maybe i should look at house paint... fits in conceptually :-)

Found out there is an artist in Brisbane doing pretty much identical work to mine...

Just got dumped a few days ago by text message... what a cowardly jerk! (this is a 42 year old 'man' that I am talking about not a teenager) It has been affecting me for about 2 weeks now but i feel so much better already :-) now i can concentrate on my honours year without some gutless prick taking over my thoughts and time.

it will be interesting to see how this influences my work.

I have also settled into my new place which is good. So good to be able to do what I like, how I like, when I like :-)

my personal life is really distracting me from making art at the moment. it is so frustrating!!!! I am a bit of a control freak sometimes... i really felt like making stuff last night but it was late and i don't have much in the way of art supplies at home right now. i have my living arrangements sorted out for now which is a great relief. I am getting back into my preferred routine and went for a skate this morning. there's only one more thing i need to sort out...

I recently got some pre-made/primed stretchers with Belgian linen :-) never tried it before so thought i would indulge. I haven't used oil paint in such a long time it is so different to acrylic. I thought it would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone a little bit. the funny thing is i went back to a technique i was using in second year in the first few photos.
